Perfectly Executed, Straightforward Filipino Dishes!

Serye Restaurant and Cafe continues to provide traditional Filipino cuisine to families. As what my good friend and owner of the restaurant, Mr Alvin Reyes Lim explained, Serye is a play on their family’s surname “R-E-Y-E-S.” Engracia Cruz Reyes was his grandmother and founder of the Aristocrat Restaurant.

On the other hand, his grandmother Teresita Reyes was the famous “Mama Sita,” founder of another popular brand in the Philippines, whose daughter was also named Engracia, Chef Alvin’s mother. Serye’s recipes and cooking traditions have been passed down through generations and is a part of the Reyes’ heritage that is worth taking pride of. As a matter of fact, Serye’s mission is “to carry on the family’s Filipino culinary tradition.

They don’t take short-cuts, preparing each dish from scratch with only the best ingredients. Recently, they even won the title for Manila’s Best Kare-Kare by Food Network, a title I believe was well-deserved (more on the Kare-Kare later).

I have been going to this restaurant for months now and I find the ambiance cozy and comfortable. The restaurant has a very neat, spacious and a very well lit interior which makes it more inviting to dine in. In fact patrons always feel like they were enjoying good food at the comfort of their own homes.

Here it seems at Serye, simple Filipino food done well is actually cosmopolitan, sophisticated with a western and asian influence. The sophisticated and cosmopolitan way of representing the Filipino food was totally awesome.

All their staff were very courteous, very hospitable and ready for any requests when needed. Taking good care of their customers requests and needs were their priority aside from delivering authentic and #AwesomelyYummy food.

The smile on their faces make the environment more relaxing and ultimately a very nice place to enjoy your meal, especially when the owner was there also to share his story about the restaurant and the food.

I am always amazed by how they have continuously evolved in showcasing different top of the line Filipino cuisines. However I would like to share to you my top 5 or what Serye describes as the FAB 5. There is so much to taste in their revolving menu. But there is always one thing that stands out for me, the Kare-Kare (picture below).

FAB 1 of 5 – Classic Kare-Kare

This is undeniably the best Kare-Kare in Manila and proven by the people as it currently won the title of Manila’s Best Kare-Kare by Food Network from its segment of Food Wars Asia – Kare Kara (Jan 2016). This is the truly an #AwesomelyYummy dish.

I can taste the finely ground peanuts and the slightly roasted rice grains of the thick and savory Kare-Kare stew. It was very flavorful with the oxtail and the tripe was very tender and soft, it felt like it just melts in your mouth. The combination of the homemade bagoong and the Kare-Kare is truly a total winner. It was definitely a balance of sweet and salty flavors in your mouth.

FAB 2 of 5 – Boneless Crispy Pata

They have found another way of serving the good old crispy pata, they made it Boneless Crispy Pata. This is really good because everyone gets a fair share of tasting the crispy skin. Sharing this to everyone is really easier than it used to. I think this is ideal for dates or formal occasions where you don’t have to dig through the bones and get your hands dirty.

FAB 3 of 5 – Laing Con Camaron Rebosado

Another personal favourite besides the Kare Kare is the rich flavor of coconut milk and gabi leaves combined together to create the perfectly seasoned Laing Con Camaron Rebosado.

The Camaron on top was a great way to add the some crunchiness into the Laing. It also had a little kick of spiciness which I really liked.

FAB 4 of 5 – Binagoongan Lechon Kawali

And of course you cannot leave Serye without trying their Binagoongan Lechon Kawali. Missing this would be like missing half of your life!

Kidding aside, this is the perfect Binagoongan Lechon Kawali I’ve tasted. The meat was tender, texture and taste was heaven.

FAB 5 of 5 – Bibingka

I’ve known Bibingka as one of the classic Filipino delicacies. Never thought that this dish will be given attention to detail and is one of Serye’s Fab 5. The Bibingka in Serye is NOT just another Filipino delicacy, this is special Bibingka.

The salted egg and the fluffy Bibingka turned out to have balanced the taste and goodness in your mouth.

Now, you cannot leave a Filipino Restaurant with out the famous Halo Halo. The Halo Halo was a very good way to end the meal. The complete and fresh ingredients of the Halo Halo made it more satisfying. It was sweet, creamy and deliciously good as a summer cooler.

Overall, I would highly recommend Serye Restaurant and Cafe to families, friends and anyone locally and internationally who is craving for authentic and consistent Filipino cuisines. Serye’s experience is a representation of a modern and classic Filipino home where you can invite friends and families for a get together.

They are trying to create a feeling that this is your nice elegant filipino home and you simply just invite your family and friends, while you entertain them and filipino food is served for you, simulating your living and dining area… AWESOME!!

This is what I am looking for, delicious Filipino food that should taste, smell, prepared and cooked the best way possible. While having that homey ambiance and welcoming service organized all in one spot, Serye Restaurant and Cafe. This restaurant has a special place in my heart, a place that I can call my “home” and you can too!

They may not offer the modern and latest cooking techniques but this is Filipino food prepared and enjoyed as it should be.
